Incubator v2

my recoding

I took a few months break from the game dev scene for life reasons, but when I came back this weird game was still haunting my thoughts. Could we finish the game? What if I carried on working on it? How would I do that with a dev who was busy with their own projects?

The answer was - remake it myself entirely.

This pretty much started my whole game dev journey, and it couldn’t have been a cooler project. It had a lot of interesting mechanics, which I am told now are fairly complex for a beginning point, but back then it was the only game I had seen someone logically figure out, and it encouraged me to try. Seeing as I wanted to use Godot and not Unity, I didn’t even want to ask for the original game files to look through. I just used what I remembered and what I wanted to recreate of the game to wire up all the assets I had.

The main mechanics were:

  • a hunger bar that increased
  • a mouldy bar that increased and with each increase spawned a point of moss to clean
  • a health bar that took damage when the babies were too hungry or mouldy
  • an inventory to collect things in to
  • multiple scenes that exited to a top down overworld map view
  • a way to feed the babies
  • a way to scrub them clean
